da Il tempo e il Destino  di Giuseppe Mascotti

afa II / sultry day II

Since the faint bright morning
Senses forebode the harassment
of pitiless noon’s sultry heat;
and sadly know how much life
blood and nature are burdened.

Still skillful in indurance man
discards as physical punishment
the sunny blue shine becoming
blinding heat, consumed breathing.

If wind and rain in slashing storm
envelop thought to sudden accident
of dreaded unyielding destiny,
how much more absurd this plenty
of light and sunshine against us sharpened.
Consider the old, the asthmatic, the heart sufferers,
the tender creatures in cradles.

When power and progress are in line,
some relief is brought about along them
by the still arguing mind: phases of the universe
decreed, occurring, so much misery
- in every size and measure,
the works of man – before the unmoved
flowing of harmful minutes!

We have always known: by a defensive brand
our stay on earth is marked
which cannot bend a timeless course;
yet, confident in care and conscience,
in human creation gives oneself away
to the whole created universe
from the beginning to the last whimper of time.
