braccia nel sonno / arms in sleep

  Arms in sleep

She peacefully sleeps on her side,
arms stretched to the place,
now empty, of her man, they
seem to be chasing him pleading.

On parting he silently recalls
Mauriac’s words, love’s pain:
“Rather than by those we love, our heart
is marked by those who love us.”

No apologies, ideals, achievements
can overcome the shared mound
of years with another being,
for someone who was all,
unable to give it all in return.

How come, among all images, in sequence
of minutes in days, unexpressed
conversation of life, those arms
persist in the eyes? They might be saying:
“Nothing we have but this extreme flapping:
we reach out for you in pleading offer.”
